The International Relations Program organized a guest speaker session titled “A Holistic Approach to Climate Change” focused on SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 14: Life Below Water. The aim was to understand the severity of the climatic degradation and its effects on health and wellbeing of the indigenous communities living along with Karachi’s coastal line.
Ms. Fatima Majeed, (Senior Vice Chairperson Pakistan Fisher Folk Forum) emphasized the interconnected nature of urban and marine ecosystems in combating climate change. she shed light on the administrative and political challenges faced by Karachi’s fishermen community, how those challenges are deteriorating state of Karachi’s coastal areas are affecting their livelihood.
Mr. Manzoor Ahmed Arfani (Chairman Parliament Committee Health Department) (encouraged participants to adopt an integrated approach, recognizing that sustainable urban living and healthy marine environments are interdependent.
Mr. Abdul Majeed Motani (president Pakistan Fisher Folk Forum, Karachi Division) shed light on sustainable urban planning, renewable energy solutions, and the importance of resilient infrastructure to create eco-friendly cities (SDG 11) and critical state of marine ecosystems, urging to protect marine biodiversity and maintain the health of our oceans (SDG 14).
Dr. Sidra Ahmed concluded the session with vote of thanks, Dr. Samreen Bari (Head of H&SS) presented token of appreciation to the respected guests. Session was moderated by Hafsa Bibi(BS IR- 3).
